Is it by Design?

Your business is running exactly how you have it designed.

Not enough new business? This is by design.

Unpredictable revenue and unreliable pipelines? This is by design.

Sales cycle is long and getting caught in unpaid consulting? This is by design.

Giving up margin to win business even though you have the competitive edge? This is by design.

For many people, this rule is a tough one to swallow. However, it’s reality.

Look at the month of December. For many people, they were going from function to function - one event to another. Why? They like to take part in the holiday spirit and this is what they chose to do - hence it's their design. Others who took a low-key approach to what can be a crazy month designed it to be low key. It's that simple.

Businesses are the same way.

Oftentimes activity can be confused with results. In a recent conversation with a company president, he shared with me how they have a good company with good people and the top-notch professional service they provide. He shared with me how they have grown 20% year after year for the past three years. I couldn’t resist after he shared this positive news and simply asked: “why are you talking with me if you have been up 20% year over year recently?”

The answer was simple. They were doing well but he felt like they were going about it with sheer effort and energy. They were a flurry of activity and it was a “numbers” game. This was how they had defined reaching success but he started to realize throughout our conversation they needed to change the design to get a more effective and even stronger result.

As a leader of an organization, take a step back and ask yourself what designs need to be changed in order for the organization to get a better result?

The answer might surprise you. A simple redesign - yes, it still takes effort and energy - will leave a lasting impact.
