Team Building in the Workplace

February 1st, 2010

I have to admit that my singing has much to be desired. Some might say that I sound worse than whales during mating season, therefore I refrain from singing. There is one exception to my singing and that is church. I have always believed that church is a time for celebration and worship so I sing! It is interesting when my singing voice is blended with other equally offensive cantors –you barely notice my out-of-tune voice.

Last week I was singing in a mumble because I didn’t want to be heard by the parishioners standing in the pew in front of us. The person next to me was singing at the top of her lungs in the most obnoxious and nauseating way. Instead of continuing to listen I thought it was the right time for a restroom break. As I walked in front of the congregation to make my way to the men’s room, I couldn’t help but notice that my pew partner’s voice had blended with the entire congregation. The song was beautiful and well harmonized with the combined voices of all.

It came to me that at times we may feel inadequate in our team settings or question what contribution we are adding to others. Standing alone, being a “lone wolf” or worse yet being selfish with our talents, we fully expose ourselves to our perceived inadequacies. Yet when we blend ourselves into a team and fully contribute, our self-perceived imperfections are harmonized by other’s short-comings, and to outside observers, the team looks harmonious. I am convinced that when teams, groups and families become dysfunctional it is because everyone is self-absorbed in their faults rather than their personal contribution to the team. Therefore, I challenge you (and myself) to fully immerse ourselves into a work team, a group of friends or our families, and create a teamwork choir that drowns out our personal shortcomings and contributes to others in a harmonious way.

Not sure how you did it Paul, but that blog came at a time when I really needed to hear it.

Thanks

I’ve never thought about it that way before. And, you’re totally right, when I am fully assimilated into my team, I am confident in my strengths and confident about my results.

That’s one refreshing way of team building.
